The Confucius Institute is a non-profit-making organisation, devoted to promoting the understanding of Chinese language and culture throughout the world, strengthening cultural co-operation and developing friendly relationships between China and other nations. Its Headquarters are based at Hanban, in Beijing, China.

The Confucius Classroom at Wigan & Leigh College is funded and supported by the Headquarters of the Confucius Institute. The Xi’an Bo- Ai International School is Wigan & Leigh College’s Chinese partner in the Confucius Classroom. It was first opened in December 2008 by the then Mayor of Wigan, Cllr Rona Winkworth, and the Vice-Governor of Shaanxi Province, Madam Zhu Jingzhi. The Classroom is open to students and people from across the Wigan borough, who are interested in learning about Chinese language and culture.

Summer Campus China
In July 2009 Wigan & Leigh College organised a trip to China for some of its students. They spent the first week staying at the Xi’an Bo-Ai International School in the Shaanxi Province, learning basic Chinese language, craft and cookery, as well as visiting local attractions. The final five days were spent sight-seeing in Beijing. The trip was a great success and the College is organising another for summer 2010.

The Summer Campus China is arranged together with our partner college, the Xi’an Bo-Ai International School, and subsidised by Wigan & Leigh College and the Confucius Classroom. For more information, contact Nan Wei (Nancy) n.wei@wigan-leigh.ac.uk
