Interested in an Apprenticeship? Look no further…
At Wigan & Leigh College we have excellent workshops and training environments, plus well-qualified and experienced staff with many years of industrial and commercial expertise.
What is an Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are an excellent way of gaining a nationally recognised qualification and workplace experience.
Apprentices are employees, earn a wage and work with experienced staff to gain
nationally recognised skills & qualifications. They usually have a day release from work to come into College to work on their qualification, but this is dependent on their employer. Some employer prefer employees to complete their qualifications on site and a College Tutor will come in to see Apprenitces on a regular basis.
Depending on the level of apprenticeship, the apprentice's ability and the industry sector. Apprenticeships can from 1 to 4 years to complete.
The Main Benefits of an Apprenticeship:
How much do you get paid?
The National minimum Wage for apprentices (under 19 or in the first year of an apprenticeship if you are 19) is £2.60 per hour. You will be paid whilst you are working plus the time you spend training as part of the apprenticeship. You need to work a minimum of 16 hours per week.
Employers can and do pay above the national minimum wage.
Who can become an Apprentice?
Anybody above 16 years-old, whether they are just leaving school, have been working for years or are looking to start a new career. You will be working in the occupation for your chosen apprenticeship.
What next?
Once you have chosen the occupational area you wish to complete an Apprenticeship in, you need to complete the application form and send it to the College.
You must seek an employer to fulfil the employment element of the Apprenticeship programme. You can submit your application to the College, although your application cannot be processed until you have employment.
We recommend that you register at the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) website www.apprenticeships.org.uk allowing you to search and apply for Apprenticeship vacancies in your area. Your local Connexions service can also help with finding an employer.
When you have secured employment please contact Training Works on 01942 761940 so that you’re application can be processed.
We recommend that if a full time equivalent course is available in your chosen occupational area, then you complete an application for this course. This will provide you with an alternative route if you are unable to secure an employer or change your mind about the Apprenticeship programme.
