AS & A Level Points Scoring System
Generally you will need a minimum 5 GCSEs at grade C or above from different subjects including English.
For some subjects you will need a grade B in a specific GCSE subject, these subjects will be highlighted in
the ‘What qualifications do I need?’ section of the course information.
The College now uses a points scoring system to help you with your AS/A Level application.
STEP 1
Select your best 8 predicted/achieved grades.
STEP 2
Using your best 8 predicted/achieved grades
calculate what each grade is worth and add
together. Each predicted/achieved grade is worth a
number of points as follows:
A* = 58 points
A = 52 points
B = 46 points
C = 40 points
D = 34 points
E = 28 points
F = 22 points
U = 0 points
For vocational courses at Level 2:
Distinction = 55 points
Merit = 49 points
Pass = 40 points
STEP 3
Having calculated what each of your
predicted/achieved grades is worth, and added
them together, you will have a total number of
points. Divide your total by 8 (or by the number of
subjects taken.)
For example:
If you have 1 grade A, 2 grade Bs, 4 grade Cs and 1
grade D you will calculate your points as follows:
1 grade A = 52 points
2 grade Bs = 92 points
4 grade Cs = 160 points
1 grade D = 34 points
Total = 338 points
Adding these together gives you a total of 338
points. You then divide the number of points by 8
(or by the number of subjects taken)
338 points/8 = 42.25 points.
If you have between 37 and 43 points you will
choose 3 subjects from a more limited range of subjects. This will be discussed with you at your
interview.
If you have over 43 points you can choose from
3 or 4 subjects from our full range of AS/A Level
subjects
Students usually study between 3 or
4 AS subjects in their first year
with the option of converting to a
minimum of 3 or 4 full A Levels in
their second year.
