Rachel Dootson
Twenty one year old year old Rachel Dootson, from Marsh Green, has recently been awarded Student of the Year for the Adult and Community Award.

Life has had its ups and downs for young mum, Rachel. After the birth of her son she was keen to continue her education and complete her GCSEs. It had always been in the back of her mind to pursue a career in midwifery but she didn’t have the confidence to go ahead with her goal. She then took a Level 2 Hairdressing course soon realising this was not what she ultimately wanted to do with her life.

In March 2009, Rachel joined the new Sure Start Centre opened at Lamberhead Green and Rachel actively became involved. The skills, confidence & support that she had gained attending the Surestart Centre prompted her to go back to her original plan. The centre offered parenting classes and short introductory courses in subjects like flower arranging, jewellery making and a Parent’s Pamper day.  The offer of Maths and English courses provided the opportunity of taking a level 2 qualification which she passed with flying colours.

Rachel has now progressed onto a Health & Social Care course at Wigan and Leigh College and now feels really excited about pursuing her long term goal of becoming a midwife.

Theresa Vaughan

After the birth of her son, four years ago Theresa looked back at her career path and decided that she would make some changes and challenge herself to improve her education and job prospects. Realising the benefits that a College education would have, she investigated what her options would be to develop her future career plans.

The fashion conscious, 21 year old, from Leigh, had a creative eye and was interested in the arts.  In 2006 she enrolled on to a floristry course at Wigan and Leigh College that would help her confidence and get back into education. With the support of funding for her course through the College Theresa was able to send her son to nursery whilst she attended her classes and successfully completed her NVQ in Floristry. She thoroughly enjoyed the College’s atmosphere and made the decision that after the summer break she would continue on to the Level 3 National Certificate in Floristry which provided her with the skills to create professional floral arrangements for occasions such as wedding bouquets, funeral wreaths and commercial displays.

Theresa is still continuing her educational journey and has recently completed the first year of her two year course in 3D Design with Interior Design that covers subjects such as design, isometric drawing, textiles and architecture, commenting that although the course is more in-depth and intense it was very enjoyable and she can’t wait for the second year to start.

Speaking about her experiences Theresa said, ‘As an adult returning to College I wanted a course that would fit in with my son but also get a good qualification. I chose the 3D Interior Design course as it was varied and had lots to offer. My future plans are to go to university studying textiles and hope to open my own business designing and making my own handbags and 3D textiles.’

Outside of College Theresa spends time with her son and also loves to dance – especially ballroom and latin and has taken part in formation team dancing.
