Study Tips

Preparing for exams can be a daunting task, but it will improve your chances of getting your dream job, so it’s got to be worth it. Changing your study and revision habits can increase your chances of success in the exam – and your future.

PLAN AHEAD

Work out how many subjects and modules you have to cover and how much time you have until your exams, before putting together a timetable. Try to allocate time each day to a variety of subjects, so you don’t get bored, and start with your weakest subjects first. Spending too much time on one subject can be draining, which means it’s less likely to stay in your mind.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

Rather than memorising, try to concentrate on understanding each part, as this will make it much easier to remember. You could try mixing your revision up by looking for fresh sources of information, rather than relying on notes taken in class. If you’re struggling, why not invite a friend over to revise with you? That way, you can help each other. Create your own set of revision postcards. They can be used for brief notes, spider diagrams, pictures, lists of key words and your acronyms for key ideas.

FOCUS

Trying to revise is difficult at the best of times, without distractions such as social networking sites, the TV and family. So, try to dedicate a quiet space to your revision. This could be in your bedroom at home or even in the local library. Make sure you take regular breaks to give yourself a rest, and keep drinking plenty of water and eating healthy snacks, as your brain will need refueling. If it makes things easier, set yourself little goals for each revision session, with rewards at the end to keep focused.

THE NIGHT BEFORE

Have a good night’s sleep before the exam and don’t stay up late. Read through your revision cards and then relax at home.

ON THE DAY

Keep your energy levels up and ensure you eat breakfast on the day of the exam. An active brain needs a balanced diet – eat sensibly, don’t skip meals or make do with snacks. Check the starting time of the exam, allow plenty of time to get there and make sure you have everything you need. Lastly, take a deep breath, count to ten and give the paper your best shot.

We wish you the very best of luck!
