Dr derek green - university centre, Electrical & electronic ENGINEERING programmes

"I love everything about this industry, the maths, the science, the challenges. Engineering is about bringing all this together to achieve a desired outcome. If I could start my career again, I would do exactly the same."

Current role

I currently teach on the University Centre Wigan & Leigh College programmes including the HNC, HND and BSc (Hons) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering. I came into teaching because I enjoy working with young engineers and shaping the way they consider engineering as a profession.

before teaching...

Over 45 years experience working in the Armed Forces, industry and consultancy have equipped me with a vast knowledge and expertise I can share with students.

career highlights and achievements...

A career highlight for me was working with British Gas Exploration and Lloyds on off-shore safety systems on gas rigs.

inspiration...

I was inspired by a Senior Engineer, Jack Stonier, who was also a fighter pilot in the second world war. His belief was that things always work in practice if you have the correct theory, quite an outstanding man.

academic background

I started my graduate education with a BSc (Hons) in Electrical Engineering and then progressed onto a Masters in Control and Instrumentation before completing a Doctorate in Microelectronics and Robotics.
