A Level Drama & Theatre Studies
Is this course for me?
This course is ideal if you enjoy performing, being creative, and working as part of a team. It suits students who want to explore theatre through acting, directing or design, as well as developing analytical and written skills. It builds confidence, creativity and communication—useful for both creative and academic pathways.
You will explore a mix of practical performance and theory, including:
Creating your own devised performance from a stimulus
Performing scripted and devised work
Studying a range of play texts and theatre practitioners
Analysing live theatre productions
Understanding how drama is influenced by social, cultural and historical contexts
60% coursework
Devised performance + portfolio
Scripted performance (externally assessed)
40% written exam
Analysis of set texts
Evaluation of live theatre
Assessment includes both practical performances and written work.
Full time for two academic years.
A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 5 and 2 GCSE subjects graded 6 including English.
GCSE Drama is useful but not essential
An interest in performance and theatre is important
This course can lead to:
University degrees in Drama, Performing Arts, Theatre Studies, English or Media
Careers in acting, directing, theatre production, teaching, media or creative industries
Transferable skills for a wide range of careers including communication, teamwork and problem-solving

Students aged 19+ will need to pay an exam fee of £60.00
