A Level Extended Choices Criminology
Is this course for me?
This course is ideal if you are interested in crime, criminal investigations and the justice system. It suits students who enjoy analysing real-life cases, debating social issues and exploring why people commit crimes. You should be interested in developing skills in research, evaluation and critical thinking.
Students taking this qualification will normally study it alongside at least two full A Levels, making it a great option for those wanting a mixed academic and vocational programme.
You will explore a range of topics linked to crime and society, including:
Different types of crime and criminal behaviour
Why people commit crimes and how crime affects society
The role of the criminal justice system
Crime scene investigation and the use of evidence
How laws are created and changed
Campaigning for changes to laws and social policy
The course combines theory with the study of real-life case studies and contemporary issues.
Assessment is through a combination of:
Controlled assessment coursework
External examinations
You will complete research tasks, reports and written examinations based on applied criminology topics.
Full time for two academic years.
A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-5 including Maths and English
University study in Criminology, Law, Sociology, Psychology or Policing
Careers in policing, law, probation, social work, forensic investigation or public services
Apprenticeships and further training in related sectors
You will also gain transferable skills in research, communication, analysis and problem-solving.

Students aged 16-18 do not pay exam fees.
Students aged 19+ will need to pay an exam fee of £185.00
