A Level Religious Studies
Is this course for me?
This course is ideal if you enjoy debating big questions about life, ethics and belief. It suits students who are interested in philosophy, religion and moral issues, and who like developing arguments, analysing ideas and evaluating different viewpoints. You do not need to be religious—just open-minded and willing to think critically.
You will explore three key areas:
Philosophy of Religion - including arguments for the existence of God, evil and suffering, and religious experience
Religion and Ethics - studying moral theories such as utilitarianism and deontology, and applying them to real-world issues
Study of Religion - an in-depth study of a specific religion (e.g. Christianity), including beliefs, practices and developments
You will develop skills in essay writing, critical analysis and evaluation, using a range of scholarly views.
100% written exams (three papers at the end of Year 13):
Philosophy of Religion
Religion and Ethics
Study of Religion
Each exam focuses on extended essay writing and evaluation of arguments.
Full time for two academic years
A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 5 or above including maths and English and 2 GCSE subjects at Grade 6 or above
An interest in discussion, reading and writing is essential
This course can lead to:
University degrees in Philosophy, Theology, Religious Studies, Law, Politics or Sociology
Careers in law, teaching, social work, journalism, public services or ethics-based roles
Transferable skills valued in many areas, including critical thinking, argumentation and communication

Students aged 19+ will need to pay an exam fee of £100.00
