Is this course for me?
This course is designed for learners who are new to construction and want to build confidence through practical, hands?on learning. It is ideal if you:
Are at an early stage of learning or returning to education
Have little or no experience of construction or practical trades
Want to develop basic skills before progressing to a Level 1 qualification
The course is suitable for school leavers, adult learners, or those who need extra support with learning and confidence. You should be willing to try new activities, follow instructions, and work safely as part of a group.
The North-West Construction & Technology Excellence College (CTEC) at Wigan & Leigh College provides high-quality training for careers in construction. It was created in response to the need for around 40,000 new workers to fill construction jobs across the UK.
Construction is a modern industry with a wide range of opportunities. It combines technology, creativity, and practical skills, including digital design, 3D modelling, and more sustainable methods of building.
CTEC courses are developed with employers, ensuring you gain the skills companies are actively looking for. You'll build real experience and develop the knowledge employers value, helping you stand out when applying for apprenticeships or jobs.
The Entry Level 3 Certificate in Construction Multi?skills introduces you to a range of basic construction skills and helps you understand how the construction industry works.
You will study areas such as:
Health, safety and welfare in a construction environment
Introduction to construction tools, equipment and materials
Basic bricklaying skills
Introduction to carpentry and joinery tasks
Basic plastering techniques
Simple painting and decorating skills
Safe working practices on site and in workshops
Developing confidence, teamwork and communication skills
Learning is mainly practical and supported by classroom sessions to build understanding at a comfortable pace.
Assessment is supportive and ongoing, designed to help you succeed.
You will be assessed through:
Practical tasks carried out in workshop environments
Tutor observation of your skills and safe working practices
Portfolio evidence, such as photographs, worksheets and short written or verbal tasks
Online and Written Exams
Demonstrating basic understanding of tools, materials and health and safety
Assessment focuses on effort, participation and developing basic practical skills.
Full time for one academic year
There are no formal entry requirements. Places are allocated following an interview, based on an applicant's demonstrated motivation, appropriate and safe behaviour and willingness to learn.'
After successfully completing this course, you may progress to:
Level 1 Diploma in Construction Multi?skills
Level 1 qualifications in specific construction trades such as Bricklaying, Carpentry, Painting and Decorating or Plastering
Further entry?level or pre?apprenticeship construction courses
This qualification provides a positive starting point for learners who want to move towards further education or training in construction.
Due to the practical nature of the course, all students will require essential safety equipment, including work trousers and steel toe?cap boots. You will be fully supported by our experienced, trade?qualified tutors to help you achieve your goals.
