This course is ideal if you are interested in the construction industry and want to gain a broad introduction to a range of practical construction skills. It is particularly suitable if you:
Are unsure which construction trade you would like to pursue
Are new to construction and want to build confidence
Prefer hands?on learning rather than classroom?based study
The course is suitable for school leavers or adults with little or no previous experience. You should be motivated, willing to learn safely, and interested in practical work across different construction trades.
The North-West Construction & Technology Excellence College (CTEC) at Wigan & Leigh College provides high-quality training for careers in construction. It was created in response to the need for around 40,000 new workers to fill construction jobs across the UK.
Construction is a modern industry with a wide range of opportunities. It combines technology, creativity, and practical skills, including digital design, 3D modelling, and more sustainable methods of building.
CTEC courses are developed with employers, ensuring you gain the skills companies are actively looking for. You'll build real experience and develop the knowledge employers value, helping you stand out when applying for apprenticeships or jobs.
The Level 1 Diploma in Construction Multi?skills provides a foundation in several construction trades, helping you develop basic skills and an understanding of the construction industry.
You will study areas such as:
Health, safety and welfare in a construction environment
Introduction to construction tools, equipment and materials
Basic bricklaying skills
Introduction to carpentry and joinery techniques
Basic painting and decorating skills
Introduction to plastering techniques
Safe working practices on construction sites
Employability skills, teamwork and communication
Learning takes place mainly through practical workshop activities, supported by classroom?based sessions to build underpinning knowledge.
Assessment is continuous and designed to support your learning throughout the course.
You will be assessed through:
Practical assessments carried out in workshop environments
Tutor observation of skills and safe working practices
Portfolio evidence, including worksheets, photographs and short written tasks
Online and Written Exams
Demonstrating understanding of tools, materials and health and safety
Assessment focuses on practical skills, safe working and basic knowledge.
Full-Time for one academic year.
A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-1 or equivalent including English and Maths.
After successfully completing this qualification, you may progress to:
Level 1 or Level 2 qualifications in a specific construction trade, such as Bricklaying, Carpentry and Joinery, Painting and Decorating or Plastering
An apprenticeship (subject to entry requirements)
Entry?level roles or work experience in the construction industry
This qualification is an excellent starting point for learners who want to explore different trades before choosing a specialist pathway.
Due to the practical nature of the course, all students will require essential safety equipment, including work trousers and steel toe?cap boots. You will be fully supported by our experienced, trade?qualified tutors to help you achieve your goals.
