This course is ideal if you are new to painting and decorating and would like to develop basic practical skills in a supportive learning environment. It is suitable for:
School leavers with little or no experience in construction
Learners who enjoy practical, hands?on work
Those considering a career in the Painting and Decorating trade
You should be willing to learn safely, follow instructions, and take pride in producing neat and accurate work.
The North-West Construction & Technology Excellence College (CTEC) at Wigan & Leigh College provides high-quality training for careers in construction. It was created in response to the need for around 40,000 new workers to fill construction jobs across the UK.
Construction is a modern industry with a wide range of opportunities. It combines technology, creativity, and practical skills, including digital design, 3D modelling, and more sustainable methods of building.
CTEC courses are developed with employers, ensuring you gain the skills companies are actively looking for. You'll build real experience and develop the knowledge employers value, helping you stand out when applying for apprenticeships or jobs.
The Level 1 Diploma provides an introduction to the skills, knowledge and working practices used in painting and decorating. You will develop confidence using tools, materials and techniques commonly used within the trade.
You will study areas such as:
Health, safety and welfare in construction
Painting and decorating tools, equipment and materials
Surface preparation methods
Applying paint using brushes and rollers
Basic decorative finishes
Understanding different types of paints and coatings
Safe working practices in a decorating environment
Employability skills, teamwork and communication
Learning is mainly practical, supported by classroom?based lessons to build underpinning knowledge.
Assessment is continuous and designed to support your development throughout the course.
You will be assessed through:
Practical assessments in workshop conditions
Tutor observation of your painting and decorating skills
Portfolio evidence, including photos, worksheets and short written tasks
Online and Written Exams
Demonstrating safe and effective working practices
Full time for one academic year
A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-2 including English and Maths.
After successfully completing this qualification, you may progress to:
Level 2 Painting and Decorating qualifications
An apprenticeship in Painting and Decorating (subject to entry requirements)
This course provides a strong foundation for learners wishing to progress towards a career in Painting and Decorating.
Due to the practical nature of the course, all students will require essential safety equipment, including work trousers and steel toe?cap boots. You will be fully supported by our experienced, trade?qualified tutors to help you achieve your goals.
