Sport National Extended Diploma Performance & Excellence Pathway - Football Development Pathway
Is this course for me?
This course is designed for students who are serious about developing both their football performance and their understanding of the sports industry. The Football Development Pathway combines academic study with a structured football programme, giving you the opportunity to improve your technical, tactical and physical performance alongside gaining a nationally recognised qualification.
You'll train and play regularly as part of a competitive football environment, while also studying key areas such as coaching, fitness training, sports psychology and performance analysis. The programme is suited to players who want to progress in football, move into coaching, or pursue careers within the sport and active leisure industry.
You'll have access to high-quality facilities at Leigh Sports Village and Leigh East Rugby Club (3G pitch), as well as Leigh Leisure Centre, including the sports hall, gym, swimming pool and Leigh Harriers athletics track. These facilities support both your practical football development and your wider physical preparation.
This course is for motivated individuals who are committed to improving their performance, maintaining high standards of attendance and behaviour, as well as balancing both academic and practical demands.
You will develop your knowledge in: Anatomy and Physiology, Sports Leadership, Practical Sports Performance, Skill Acquisition in Sport. Sports Coaching, Sports Performance Analysis and a range a specialist units to support progression into Employment or HE
5 additional hours of bespoke training will be embedded into your timetable to focus on football specific activities, including S&C, technical and tactical skills, recovery and match analysis.
By a variety of continuous assessments, both practical and written. Learners will also undertake two externally assessed units each year of the course
Full time for two academic years.
A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-4 or equivalent including maths and English.
Following completion of Level 3, you may progress to the HND Sport and Exercise Science at Wigan & Leigh College, study a sport related degree at university, or secure employment. A highly experienced Sports Coach can earn £30,000- £35,000 a year. A fully qualified Sport Scientist with a degree, working at a high level of competitive sport, can earn over £60,000 on average a year. Other careers include Professional Sportsperson, Athlete, Sport Psychologist, Personal Trainer, Performance Analyst, Physiotherapist, Sport Nutritionist and Teacher
In the BTEC Nationals in Sport there are a number of opportunities during the teaching and learning phase to give learners practice in developing employability skills. Where employability skills are referenced in this specification, we are generally referring to skills
in the following three main categories.
• Cognitive and problem-solving skills: using critical thinking, approaching non-routine problems applying creative solutions.
• Interpersonal skills: communicating, working collaboratively, negotiating and influencing, self-presentation.
• Intrapersonal skills: self-management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring and development.
There are specific requirements in some units for assessment of these skills where relevant, for example where learners are required to undertake real or simulated activities as stipulated in the CIMSPA practical assessment requirements.
