Animal Management

You will develop an understanding of a broad range of issues relevant to the animal management sector:

• sustainability, including environmental legislation, sustainable development, climate change and waste management principles

• the principles of biosecurity

• employment rights and responsibilities and progression opportunities

• ethical principles

• the supply chain and principles of stock management

• business organisations, enterprise skills and project management

• characteristics protected by equality legislation

• communication

• principles of customer care

• finance

• health and safety

• information and data.

Through continual assessment using practical observations, written assignments, exams and an employer set project.

Full Time for two academic years.

A minimum of 5 GCSEs graded 9-4 including English, maths and science.

You may choose to work in a wide range of animal care environments, from zoos to kennels, catteries or rescue centres.



Career options include roles in:

• dog handling

• dog training

• animal care and welfare

• animal keeping

• aquarism

• zoo keeping.



You may want to take up a higher level course such as a degree apprenticeship, or go to university to study the BSc (Hons) Animal Behaviour and Welfare, or other degrees in Wildlife Conservation and Ecology.

Our animal management facilities:

• Purpose built dog kennels.

• Wide range of animals including snakes, lizards, spiders and frogs, rabbits, gerbils, and chinchillas.

• Dog grooming suites.



Tutors have experience working with varied species in a range of environments. Learn in animal settings including city farms and children's zoos, working with a wide variety of animals from domestic to farm and exotic.

Students aged 16-18 do not pay exam fees.
