Is this course for me?
This course is ideal if you are interested in starting a career in the construction industry as a bricklayer. It is suitable for school leavers or adults who want a practical, hands-on course that develops real workplace skills.
You do not need previous experience in bricklaying, but you should:
Enjoy practical and outdoor work
Be willing to work as part of a team
Have good attention to detail
Be motivated to learn workplace skills and health and safety standards
This qualification is designed to prepare you for employment or further study in bricklaying and construction trades.
The North-West Construction & Technology Excellence College (CTEC) at Wigan & Leigh College provides high-quality training for careers in construction. It was created in response to the need for around 40,000 new workers to fill construction jobs across the UK.
Construction is a modern industry with a wide range of opportunities. It combines technology, creativity, and practical skills, including digital design, 3D modelling, and more sustainable methods of building.
CTEC courses are developed with employers, ensuring you gain the skills companies are actively looking for. You'll build real experience and develop the knowledge employers value, helping you stand out when applying for apprenticeships or jobs.
You will develop the technical knowledge, practical skills, and behaviours needed to work in the bricklaying industry. The course combines classroom learning with extensive practical training in workshop environments.
You will study areas such as:
Health, safety and welfare in construction
Bricklaying tools, equipment and materials
Setting out for masonry structures
Constructing brick and block walling
Cavity walls, solid walls and basic decorative features
Mixing mortars and handling materials correctly
Working practices within the construction industry
Employability skills, teamwork and communication
The course is structured to reflect real working conditions and industry expectations.
Assessment is practical and ongoing, allowing you to demonstrate your skills as you develop them.
You will be assessed through:
Practical assessments carried out in workshop conditions
Portfolio of evidence (including photos, written tasks and observations)
Tutor observation of practical work
Knowledge-based exams and assignments related to construction theory and safety
Full time for one academic year
A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-3 or equivalent including Maths and English.
Successful completion of this qualification can lead to a range of progression opportunities, including:
An apprenticeship in Bricklaying
Employment as a bricklaying labourer or trainee bricklayer
Further full-time study in Construction
