Is this course for me?
This course is ideal if you are new to carpentry and joinery and want to develop basic skills in a practical learning environment. It is well suited to:
School leavers with little or no experience
Learners interested in working with wood and tools
Those considering a future career in the construction or woodworking trades
You should enjoy hands?on activities, be willing to follow instructions carefully, and take pride in producing practical work safely and accurately.
The North-West Construction & Technology Excellence College (CTEC) at Wigan & Leigh College provides high-quality training for careers in construction. It was created in response to the need for around 40,000 new workers to fill construction jobs across the UK.
Construction is a modern industry with a wide range of opportunities. It combines technology, creativity, and practical skills, including digital design, 3D modelling, and more sustainable methods of building.
CTEC courses are developed with employers, ensuring you gain the skills companies are actively looking for. You'll build real experience and develop the knowledge employers value, helping you stand out when applying for apprenticeships or jobs.
The Level 1 Diploma provides an introduction to carpentry and joinery skills, helping you build confidence and core knowledge.
You will study topics such as:
Health, safety and welfare in a construction environment
Carpentry and joinery tools, equipment and materials
Safe use and care of hand tools and basic power tools
Marking out and measuring materials accurately
Producing basic woodworking joints
Constructing simple carpentry and joinery components
Introduction to construction methods
Employability skills, teamwork and communication
Learning is mainly practical, supported by classroom?based theory to reinforce knowledge and understanding.
Assessment is continuous and designed to support your progress throughout the course.
You will be assessed through:
Practical assessments in workshop settings
Tutor observation of skills and safe working practices
Online Exams and Written Assessments
Portfolio evidence, including photographs, worksheets and short written tasks
Demonstrating knowledge of tools, materials and health and safety
Assessment focuses on practical ability and understanding.
Full time for one academic year
A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-2 including English and Maths.
What Can I Progress On To?
On successful completion of the course, you may progress to:
Level 2 Extended Technical Occupational Entry in Carpentry and Joinery Qualification
An Apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery
Further construction?related study
This course provides a strong foundation for learners who wish to progress into skilled trades within construction.
Due to the practical nature of the course, all students will require essential safety equipment, including work trousers and steel toe?cap boots. You will be fully supported by our experienced, trade?qualified tutors to help you achieve your goals.
