CMI First-Line Management Programme
Is this course for me?
The CMI First-Line Management Programme is designed for junior, first-line and aspiring managers who are moving from an individual contributor role into managing people and teams. It is ideal if you want to develop practical leadership skills, improve team performance and gain professional recognition through Foundation Chartered Manager (fCMgr) status. The programme focuses on real workplace impact and developing the confidence to lead others effectively.
The programme is built around three core masterclasses:
Personal and Team Effectiveness - developing personal productivity, communication and team management skills.
Managing Performance and Conflict - setting goals, monitoring performance and resolving workplace issues professionally.
Management Impact Project - completing a workplace-based project that delivers measurable improvements and demonstrates leadership impact.
You will also complete a self-assessment diagnostic to identify strengths, track progress and support your professional development.
Assessment is based on demonstrating professional competence through practical workplace application. Learners complete a Management Impact Project focused on solving a real business challenge and evidencing measurable improvements. Progress is also supported through diagnostic assessments completed at the start and end of the programme
Full time for one academic year
There are no formal entry requirements specified by CMI. The programme is aimed at new, junior and aspiring managers, team leaders and supervisors. Learners should have the capability and commitment to undertake the programme and apply their learning within a workplace setting
Successful learners will achieve Foundation Chartered Manager (fCMgr) status and can progress to:
Higher-level CMI Management and Leadership qualifications.
CMI Level 5 Management and Leadership programmes.
Chartered Manager (CMgr) status through continued professional development.
Team Leader, Supervisor, Duty Manager and First-Line Manager roles across a wide range of sectors.
The programme is mapped to the CMI Professional Standard and focuses on developing practical leadership skills that deliver measurable workplace results. Unlike traditional classroom-only management courses, learners apply their knowledge directly to live workplace challenges, helping employers build a strong leadership pipeline while supporting individual career progression. Foundation Chartered Manager (fCMgr) status is embedded within the programme, providing a recognised benchmark of professional management competence
