The North-West Construction & Technology Excellence College (CTEC) at Wigan & Leigh College provides high-quality training for careers in construction. It was created in response to the need for around 40,000 new workers to fill construction jobs across the UK.

This qualification develops the practical skills, knowledge and behaviours required for groundwork and plant operations. Learning takes place through a combination of practical training and classroom?based theory.
You will study areas such as:
Health, safety and welfare in construction
Safe working practices on construction sites
Introduction to plant operations and machinery
Preparing work areas for groundwork activities
Basic excavation and groundwork techniques
Handling materials and using tools safely
Understanding site procedures and responsibilities
Teamwork, communication and employability skills
Where appropriate, learning reflects real?world site conditions and industry expectations.
Assessment is practical and ongoing, focusing on safe and effective working practices.
You will be assessed through:
Practical assessments in simulated site or workshop conditions
Tutor observation of skills and safe behaviour
Portfolio evidence, including photographs, written tasks and worksheets
Online and Written Exams
Demonstrating understanding of health and safety and site procedures
Assessment is designed to reflect real working practices and competence.
Full-Time for one academic year.
5 GCSEs Grade 9-2 or equivalent including English and Maths.
On successful completion of this qualification, you may progress to:
Specialist plant operation training and CPCS?aligned routes
A construction or civil engineering apprenticeship
Employment as a groundworker or trainee plant operative
This course provides a strong foundation for learners aiming for a practical role within construction, groundwork or plant operations.
Due to the practical nature of the course, all students will require essential safety equipment, including work trousers and steel toe?cap boots. You will be fully supported by our experienced, trade?qualified tutors to help you achieve your goals.
