Bricklayer Apprenticeship

Bricklaying is a core function within the construction sector, particularly the house building sector.
The Government has a target to build significantly more new homes over the coming years and therefore the demand for bricklayers has never been higher.
Bricklayers lay bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures eg chimney stacks. They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects. The range of sites and projects that bricklayers will work on include large commercial developments, new builds in housing, alterations, extensions and restorations.
A bricklayer may work one-on-one or on larger jobs where their bricklaying group (gang) may work on a particular section of a building alongside other bricklaying gangs as well as other trades. Information from Institute for Apprenticeship and Technical Education 2021.
In this apprenticeship you will be learning the knowledge, skills and behaviours to be successful in your chosen role, these include: Knowledge: Health & Safety, customer service, communication, buildings, energy efficiency, Materials, alternative construction techniques, radial and battered brickwork, feature and reinforced brickwork, fireplaces and chimneys. Skills: Preparation of materials, safe working, working area, masonry structures, radial and battered brickwork, feature and reinforced brickwork, other brickwork, building technology. Behaviours: Positive and mature attitude, quality focused, effective communication, self motivated learner.
All apprentices now complete an end-point assessment to complete their qualification. This is delivered by an independent end-point assessment organisation with no affiliation to the employer or training provider. This is a national requirement and endpoint assessments are carried out by a third party assessor. End point assessments use a variety of assessment methods depending on the apprenticeship standard these can include:Professional Discussions. Interviews. Showcase portfolios. Employers are looking for apprentices who have GCSE Maths and English at Grade 4. Level 2 - A minimum of 5 GCSEs, graded 9-3 or equivalent, including Maths or English. Level 3 - 6 - A minimum of 5 GCSEs, graded 9-4 or equivalent, including Maths or English.
On completion of this Apprenticeship, the apprentice will have satisfied the requirements to obtain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Card at the appropriate level. https://www.instituteforapprenticeships.org/apprenticeship-standards/plasterer-v2-0
