On completion, a Nuclear Scientist and Nuclear Engineer Degree Apprentice will be able to use the knowledge, skills and behaviours developed to enable systems and equipment to operate safely, efficiently and in an environmentally sustainable way, meeting the requirements set out by the employer and those of the Professional Body Institutions. They will have a fundamental and core knowledge of engineering / science principles and practices and will be able to demonstrate discipline skills commensurate with their employed job role that typically will include design, plant performance enhancements, operational management, project management and maintenance of safety standards utilising analytical thinking to provide innovative solutions. They will also demonstrate good communication and team skills and the ability to communicate in a variety of forms to all levels within an organisation. In this apprenticeship, you will learn competence in technical nuclear work. Responsibility for Health, Safety, Radiation Protection, Environmental Protection, Quality, Security, Safeguards, and Risk Management. Analysing and solving engineering problems using math and scientific tools for nuclear applications. Applying engineering science to nuclear technology. Understanding stakeholder needs, business management, and commercial awareness in the nuclear industry. Applying science/engineering to Decommissioning, Waste Management, Reprocessing, and Nuclear Power Generation. Planning, managing, and reporting on nuclear projects. Synthesizing information for nuclear technology solutions. Observing, recording, and drawing conclusions from data. Applying design processes to nuclear industry standards. Understanding national and international Regulatory requirements. Developing technical reports meeting verification processes. Understanding the nuclear industry's past, present, and future. Ethical practice, role, and codes of conduct. Root cause analysis and learning from experience (LFE). Technology, safety, environmental, and economic aspects of nuclear fuels and the fuel cycle. Apprentices must successfully pass an end-point assessment to complete their qualification. This is delivered by an independent end-point assessment organisation with no affiliation to the employer or training provider. This is a national requirement and end point assessments are carried out by a third party assessor. End point assessments use a variety of assessment methods depending on the apprenticeship standard these can include: Professional Discussions, Interviews, Showcase portfolios, Practical assessment of skill, Theory assessments, Assignments and more.
Minimum 2 years - duration will be set following initial assessment of prior qualifications.
Grade C or above, or equivalent, in at least 5 GCSEs including Maths, English and Science, 96 UCAS points from relevant Level 3 qualifications and a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Engineering.
On completion of the apprenticeship, the nuclear scientist and nuclear engineer will be eligible to apply for professional registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Registered Scientist (RSci) and membership of a Professional Institute.
