Mechanical Engineering
BEng (Hons) Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (Top-Up) - Awarded by University of Lancashire
Is this course for me?
Are you looking to become a professional engineer and take your career to the next level? This top-up degree is designed for students who have already completed an HND or foundation degree in engineering and want to graduate with a full honours degree.
You'll develop your skills in design, control, sustainability, and advanced manufacturing, and gain the critical thinking and analytical knowledge needed for roles in high-level engineering or postgraduate study.
This course is ideal for learners who are already working in the industry or looking to progress into technical, design, or project engineering roles. It also supports future progression towards Professional Registration.
The course covers 120 credits at Level 6 and builds on your existing skills, with a strong focus on applied engineering and innovation.
Modules include:
• Professional Engineering Project (studied over the two-year programme)
• Control Engineering
• Sustainable Design
• Design for Manufacture
• Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics
These modules are designed to give you a broad and future-facing skillset in areas including automation, design software, and advanced simulation techniques.
Assessment includes:
• Written assignments
• Presentations
• Exams
• Practical and project-based work
The Professional Engineering Project is studied across both years and forms the core of your final assessment.
You'll study part time for two academic years with a mix of classroom, lab and project-based learning. You'll typically attend one day per week.
You'll need:
• A relevant HND or foundation degree in Engineering (240 credits, with 120 at Level 5)
• GCSE Maths at grade 4/C or above (or equivalent)
We welcome applications from mature students with relevant experience, portfolios, or employer references. Applicants may be invited to interview.
This degree supports:
• Career progression - Move into senior technical, design, or management roles in engineering sectors
• Postgraduate study - Progress to MSc programmes at University of Lancashire or other institutions
• Professional recognition - The BEng is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology on behalf of the Engineering Council for the
purposes of partly meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
You'll study in the College's industry-standard engineering labs and workshops, with access to simulation software and hands-on design tools.
As part of the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT), this course benefits from strong employer links, guest talks and curriculum input from organisations such as Sellafield, Jacobs, Nuvia and Cavendish.
The BEng is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology on behalf of the Engineering Council for the
purposes of partly meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
You'll also benefit from:
• A free student membership of the IET
• Access to University of Lancashire online library and resources
• A free scientific calculator and core textbook (Advanced Engineering Mathematics by K.A. Stroud)
• MATLAB software and a project budget for your final year project
You will be taught by experienced engineers and academics with specialisms in design, manufacturing, and nuclear decommissioning.
