The HNC in Automation and Control Engineering has been developed with industry to meet the growing demand for engineers who can work with automation, robotics and control systems. You'll explore how modern engineering systems are designed, programmed, maintained and improved, developing skills that are highly valued across manufacturing, engineering and technology sectors.
You'll be taught by industry-experienced tutors who understand what employers are looking for and will help you develop both your technical knowledge and professional skills.
This qualification is made up of mandatory core units designed to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required within automation and control engineering. You'll gain a strong understanding of engineering principles while applying your learning to real-world industry scenarios.

Throughout the course, you'll develop skills in problem-solving, system analysis, programming, project management and professional engineering practice.
We focus on applying knowledge in practical and professional contexts rather than relying solely on examinations.

These assessments are designed to reflect the types of tasks you may encounter in industry, helping you develop the confidence and competence expected by employers.
You'll study 1 day per week for 2 academic years.
To apply, you'll need:
• 96 UCAS points from a relevant Level 3 qualification
• GCSE Maths at Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent)
We also welcome applications from mature students who can demonstrate relevant industrial experience, professional qualifications, a portfolio of work or employer references.
This qualification can lead to a range of exciting opportunities, including:
• Employment - Progress into technician-level roles within automation, manufacturing, process control, robotics, maintenance engineering and industrial systems
• HND - Continue your studies and complete a Higher National Diploma in a related engineering discipline
• Higher or Degree Apprenticeships - Use your qualification as a platform for further workplace-based training and professional development
• Top-Up Degree - Following completion of your HND, you can progress onto the BEng (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering awarded by the University of Central Lancashire, delivered right here at the University Centre Wigan & Leigh College.
This course can also be delivered as part of a Higher or Degree Apprenticeship.
As a Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ), this course has been approved against employer-developed occupational standards, giving employers confidence that you have developed the skills required within the industry.
The BEng (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council. Graduates can apply for professional registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng), providing enhanced professional recognition and career opportunities within the engineering sector.
You'll be based in our specialist engineering facilities at Wigan & Leigh College, where you'll have access to modern equipment, industry-standard software and practical learning environments that reflect current engineering practices.
