You'll develop a strong foundation in construction design and build management, preparing you to take on real responsibility and lead in a constantly evolving industry. This course covers essential areas such as project planning, technical design, and practical construction skills. You'll learn how to collaborate effectively with architects, engineers, and other construction professionals, ensuring projects meet design specifications and are completed on time and within budget.

We offer day-time and evening options and September and January start dates. The North-West Construction & Technology Excellence College (CTEC) at Wigan & Leigh College provides high-quality training for careers in construction. It was created in response to the need for around 40,000 new workers to fill construction jobs across the UK.
Construction is a modern industry with a wide range of opportunities. It combines technology, creativity, and practical skills, including digital design, 3D modelling, and more sustainable methods of building.
CTEC courses are developed with employers, ensuring you gain the skills companies are actively looking for. You'll build real experience and develop the knowledge employers value, helping you stand out when applying for apprenticeships or jobs.
You'll explore the core principles of construction management while also gaining insight into the legal, financial, and digital aspects of the sector.
Modules include:
• Construction Design Project Design and Build (Pearson-set)
• Legal and Statutory Requirements in Construction
• Construction Environment
• Digital Applications for Building Information Modelling
• Financial Management & Business Practice in Construction
• Tender and Procurement

Alongside technical skills, you'll build essential workplace strengths such as leadership, communication, planning, and decision-making.
Assessment is practical and work-focused. You'll complete:
• Written assignments
• Coursework based on real-life scenarios
• Project work
All assessments are internally set and marked, reflecting tasks and situations you'd experience in industry. The focus is on helping you build real-world skills that employers value.
You'll study 1 day per week for 2 years. This part-time format is designed to work alongside your job or personal commitments.
To apply, you'll need:
• 96 UCAS points (MMM) from an Extended Diploma.
• GCSE Maths at Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent)
We also welcome applications from mature students with experience, a portfolio of work, or references from employers.
This course opens up a range of exciting next steps:
• Employment - Ideal preparation for supervisory or technician roles in construction
• Higher or Degree Apprenticeships - Use this qualification as a stepping stone to further structured training
• HND - Study for one more year with us to complete a Higher National Diploma
• Top-Up Degree - After your HND, you can progress to a full honours degree at university
This course can also be delivered as part of a higher or degree apprenticeship.
