You'll be taught by industry-experienced staff and gain access to specialised mechanical engineering labs. If you're aiming for a technician, design, or development role in mechanical engineering, this Higher Technical Qualification is an ideal launchpad.
We know you're balancing life, work, and study — which is why this course is delivered flexibly to fit around your commitments. We offer a September start with a daytime and evening option and a January evening option.
This course covers key areas of mechanical engineering and includes mandatory units that develop your core knowledge, technical understanding, and essential skills:
• Engineering Design
• Engineering Maths
• Managing a Professional Engineering Project (Pearson-set)
• Mechanical Principles
• Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines
• Fluid Mechanics
• Production Engineering for Manufacture
• Quality and Process Improvement
You'll be assessed through a combination of coursework, practical projects, technical assignments and presentations. Each unit is internally assessed and graded. Your final qualification grade is based on the performance across all units.
You'll study 2 evenings per week for 2 years. This part-time format is designed to work alongside your job or personal commitments.
To apply, you'll need:
• 96 UCAS points A relevant Level 3 qualification
• GCSE Maths at Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent)
We also welcome applications from mature students with experience, a portfolio of work, or references from employers.

T•?Top-Up Degree - After completing your HND, you can progress onto the BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering awarded by the University of Lancashire, delivered right here at the University Centre Wigan & Leigh College
This course can also be delivered as part of a Higher or Degree Apprenticeship.
The BEng is accredited by the IET on behalf of the Engineering Council. Graduates can apply for professional registration as a Chartered Engineer — giving you greater recognition, credibility, and career potential across the industry.
You'll be based at our state-of-the-art facilities at Wigan & Leigh College, where we're investing in the next generation of engineers. Our labs and workshops are equipped with specialist engineering labs and CAD suites to reflect current industry standards.
