Mechanical Engineering
HND Mechanical Engineering for England (HTQ) – FT - awarded by Pearson
Is this course for me?
If you're passionate about solving real-world engineering problems and want to progress your career in the mechanical engineering industry, this course is designed for you. Building on the foundations of the HNC, the HND in Mechanical Engineering develops your understanding of complex mechanical systems, thermodynamics, and advanced engineering design. It's ideal if you're looking to move into senior technician or engineering roles or want to prepare for university-level study or professional status.
You'll gain industry-relevant skills, hands-on experience, and the confidence to tackle complex challenges in a rapidly evolving sector.
This course covers key areas of mechanical engineering and includes mandatory units that develop your core knowledge, technical understanding, and essential skills:
• Professional Engineering Management
• Further Engineering Mathematics
• Computational Modelling in Virtual Engineering
• Further Thermodynamics
• Thermo Fluids
• Lean Manufacture
• Advanced Mechanical Principles
Assessment is via a range of practical assignments, coursework, and project work designed to reflect real engineering problems. There are no formal exams, but you'll work on individual and group-based tasks that test your understanding and problem-solving skills.
You'll study full time for one academic year with a mix of classroom, lab and project-based learning. There will be the option to complete a HND after year 1. A part-time route is also available.
To apply, you'll need a HNC in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
This course opens up a range of exciting next steps:
•?Employment - Ideal preparation for higher-level roles in mechanical design, manufacturing, or systems engineering
•?Higher or Degree Apprenticeships - Progress into structured workplace training.
T•?Top-Up Degree - After completing your HND, you can progress onto the BEng (Hons) Mechnical Engineering awarded by UCLan, delivered right here at the University Centre Wigan & Leigh College
This course can also be delivered as part of a Higher or Degree Apprenticeship.
The BEng is accredited by the IET on behalf of the Engineering Council. Graduates can apply for professional registration as a Chartered Engineer — giving you greater recognition, credibility, and career potential across the industry.
You'll be based at our state-of-the-art facilities at Wigan & Leigh College, where we're investing in the next generation of engineers. Our labs and workshops are equipped with specialist engineering labs and CAD suites to reflect current industry standards.
Our teaching staff have hands-on experience in engineering and bring valuable insights from industry into the classroom. You'll also benefit from smaller class sizes, one-to-one academic support, and connections with employers across the region.
As the lead college in the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT), you'll benefit from employer connections through guest speakers, live project opportunities, visits, and industry competitions — all designed to boost your employability.
We're focused on getting you work ready - not just with technical know-how, but with the confidence, communication, and teamwork skills you'll need to thrive in today's engineering sector.
