This two-year Higher National Diploma combines practical experience with theoretical knowledge in areas like physiology, nutrition, psychology, coaching and rehabilitation. You'll gain the skills, experience and confidence to work in a range of roles across sport and physical activity — or progress to a full honours degree.
This course follows a combined pathway, with both mandatory and optional modules that give you flexibility while covering key areas of sport and exercise science.

The modules listed in bold are core (mandatory) modules. Additional optional modules * are also included to make up the total credits required for your qualification — these are chosen by course leaders and maybe subject to change.
Assessment is through a variety of real-world and academic formats, including:
• Written assignments
• Practical observations
• Coursework and reports
• Presentations
This blend of assessment methods prepares you for professional environments while building real-world skills.
You'll study full-time, three days a week for two academic years — giving you time to balance work, life, and learning.
You'll require a minimum of 80 UCAS points in a relevant subject area plus GCSE English at grade 4/C or above (or equivalent).
We also welcome applications from mature students with relevant experience, portfolios, or employer references.

Further study:
• Progress to a top-up degree or enter the third year of a relevant BSc (Hons) in Sport Science, Coaching or Exercise Science at university.
You'll study the practical elements of your course at Leigh Sports Village, a state-of-the-art sporting facility and home to Leigh Leopards Rugby Team. This gives you access to industry-standard amenities for sport, physical activity, and education.
The theory-based elements of the course are delivered at Leigh Adult Learning Centre, giving you access to excellent academic facilities in a supportive environment.
Our tutors bring experience from cruise ship fitness management, football scouting, coaching in the US, and massage therapy — giving you real insight into diverse careers in the sector.
You may also gain additional qualifications to boost your employability, such as:
• Level 3/4 Sports Massage qualification
• Sports coaching certificates (course funded options may be available)
Work placement is a key part of the course. Students are encouraged to choose placements that match their career goals — from fitness testing elite athletes to leading coaching sessions in schools.
Experience beyond the classroom includes annual trips (including international options) subsidised through the University Centre Advantage Scheme, designed to expand your learning and experience new settings.
