Lean Manufacturing - Level 5 (Short course)

This short course is ideal if you are currently working in manufacturing, engineering or production and want to develop your understanding of lean manufacturing principles and process improvement techniques.
It is particularly suited to those looking to improve efficiency, reduce waste and support more sustainable ways of working within modern manufacturing environments. Whether you are looking to upskill within your current role or prepare for further higher-level study, this course provides a practical introduction to lean manufacturing in a focused and manageable format.
This short course introduces the key principles and practices of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement within modern manufacturing and engineering environments.
You will:
• Examine the common principles of lean manufacturing and how the implementation of a lean production system contributes to business success
• Evaluate the lean approach applied to the modern manufacturing environment.
• Specify a range of the process improvement tools used within lean manufacturing
• Demonstrate effective communication skills in order to lead the process of continuous improvement across an organisation.
As part of the course, you will also use immersive digital environments to explore workshop layouts and manufacturing processes, helping you identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency in real-world settings.
There is no formal assessment associated with this short course.
This short course is delivered over two consecutive Fridays: • 05/03/2027 • 12/03/2027 Total guided learning time: 12 hours
Applicants should preferably hold a relevant Level 3 or Level 4 qualification, or have significant experience working within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
This short course is designed to support progression onto our:
• HND Mechanical Engineering
• HND (HTQ) Mechanical Engineering for England
It can also support continuing professional development within manufacturing, engineering and production-based roles.
This course forms part of our higher technical engineering provision, designed in collaboration with employers to support current industry needs and workforce development.
As a partner in the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT), we work closely with industry to deliver technical education aligned to modern engineering and manufacturing careers.
You will benefit from access to specialist facilities and immersive learning technologies that support practical, industry-focused learning and the development of skills valued by employers across the engineering and manufacturing sectors.
Students aged 16-18 do not pay exam fees.
