Every year, one in ten patients develop a healthcare associated infection during their stay in a UK hospital. Approximately 5,000 patients die as a direct result of one of these infections.
In most cases. these infections are difficult to treat and can complicate current or previous illnesses, as well as causing distress for the patient and their family.
This course can help tackle the outbreak of infection in hospitals and healthcare settings by helping you understand the causes and spread of infection and how you can help to control it.
Infection prevention is crucial for saving lives. The skills you learn are vital for those who wish to work in the healthcare sector.
Aims:
• Understand the meaning and importance of infection control.
• Explore causes and transmission of infections and methods to prevent and control their spread.
Objectives:
• Provide knowledge to support roles in healthcare settings.
• Enable progression to further qualifications in health and social care.
The course is split into four manageable units:
Unit 1: Principles of the Causes and Spread of Infection in Health Care Settings
Unit 2: Principles of the Importance of Personal Hygiene and Health in the prevention and Control of Infection in Health Care Settings
Unit 3: Principles of Decontamination, Cleaning and Waste Management in Health Care Settings
Unit 4: Principles of Infection Prevention and Control in a Health Care Setting.
You will complete online platform-based questions — there are no exams and no grades.
To pass, you must show that you have met all the learning outcomes and assessment criteria set out in the qualification specification.
Our qualified assessors will give you detailed feedback, 1:1 support, and clear targets to help you succeed.
Support is available through the learning portal, email, or phone.
If your work doesn't meet the required standard, you will receive feedback, a new target date, and the chance to resubmit.
This course runs over 24 weeks and includes a recommended 111 guided learning hours (GLH). You can apply at any time, with flexible start dates available throughout the year.
There is no specific prior skill or knowledge required for this qualification. However, learners may find it helpful if they have already achieved a level 1 health and social care-related qualification.
We recommend you already have at least a Level 1 in English (GCSE grade 3/D or equivalent).
