Science Manufacturing Process Operative Apprenticeship
Is this course for me?
The broad purpose of the occupation is to complete science-based manufacturing processes to produce materials and products following standard operating procedures. Products are varied and may include battery cells, composite wind turbine parts, drugs, plastic bottles, proteins, and solvents. This involves checking and preparing materials and using specialist science-based manufacturing process plant or equipment. They monitor the process and take action to resolve deviations. Maintaining the work area is part of the role. They contribute to quality control, continuous improvement, and problem-solving activities. They also complete work records, which are important in regulated workplaces.
The Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) for the Science Manufacturing Process Operative standard collectively describe the competence needed to safely and effectively operate within a science manufacturing environment. Knowledge focuses on understanding manufacturing plant, processes, safety requirements (including PPE and GMP), organisational practices, and basic improvement techniques. Skills involve practically preparing, operating, monitoring, and shutting down equipment; maintaining product quality; completing documentation and calculations; following procedures; and supporting continuous improvement. Behaviours emphasise workplace attitudes such as teamwork, communication, responsibility, reliability, adaptability, respect for others, and a commitment to safety and quality. Together, these KSBs ensure apprentices can perform routine manufacturing tasks efficiently, compliantly, and collaboratively within a regulated industrial setting.
All apprentices now complete an end-point assessment to complete their qualification. This is delivered by an independent end point assessment organisation with no affiliation to the employer or training provider. This is a national requirement and end point assessments are carried out by a third-party assessor. End point assessments use a variety of assessment methods depending on the apprenticeship standard these can include:
Professional Discussions
Interviews
Showcase portfolios
Practical assessment of skill
Theory assessments
Assignments and more
18 months + End Point Assessment
