This qualification covers the knowledge and practical skills required to install, commission and safely work with solar photovoltaic systems in domestic and small commercial settings.
You will study areas such as:
Health, safety and risk assessment for solar PV installations
Principles of solar photovoltaic technology and electricity generation
Types of PV systems and components
System design considerations and panel positioning
Installation methods for PV modules and mounting systems
DC and AC wiring requirements
Inverters, isolation and protection devices
System commissioning, inspection and testing
Fault diagnosis and basic maintenance
Relevant standards, regulations and industry best practice
Learning combines classroom?based theory with practical activities to reflect real workplace conditions.
Assessment is designed to confirm both technical knowledge and practical competence in line with industry expectations.
You will be assessed through:
Practical assessment of solar PV installation tasks
Tutor or assessor observation of safe working practices
Knowledge?based assessments, such as written or multiple?choice tests
Completion of assessment evidence required by BPEC
Assessment is competency?based and aligned with current industry standards.

Learners must be competent electricians and hold one of the qualifications listed below or other qualifications listed in EAS tables A4.7 and 4.8 routes 1, 2, 3 and BS 7671: 2018 Requirements for Electrical Installations (18th Edition) qualification
Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment) (2357)
Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Maintenance)(2357)
Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification (5357)
Level 3 in Electrotechnical Services Experienced Worker (2356)
Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services - Electrical Installation (Building and Structures)
Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification.(2346)
Level 3 Electrotechnical in Dwellings
EAL Building Services Engineering (Level 3) - Electrotechnical Installation
Current ECS Gold Card (for domestic electrician), JIB Electrician (Not PAT tester only) or Approved Electrician Card
Other Awarding Organisations equivalences will also be acceptable
On successful completion of this qualification, you may progress to:
Employment or progression within the renewable and low?carbon energy sector
Further BPEC or Level 3 renewable technology qualifications, such as battery storage or heat pumps
Supporting evidence for MCS?aligned training pathways (subject to additional requirements)
Specialist roles involving solar PV design, installation and maintenance
