Wigan & Leigh College
The course is practical welding in one of the following processes: manual metal arc welding (MMA), metal arc gas shielded welding (MAGS) and tungsten arc gas shielded welding TIGS).
The course consists of the five practical pieces and theory work. There are 4 units in total, 3 mandatory and 1 optional. The 3 mandatory units: health and safety, communicating in engineering and organisational efficiency and the 1 optional unit is to be chosen from MMA welding, MAGS welding or TIG welding, where you will complete the following: fillet weld horizontal/vertical & vertical position, lap joint horizontal/vertical position, open corner flat position and single v butt weld flat position.
The course is one 3 hour session which will take place one evening per week for one academic year, consisting of the five practical pieces and theory work, plus health and safety.
The mandatory tests are assessed within the College and assessed by an External Verifier.
No formal qualifications are required.
Completing this course can lead to employment in the Fabrication or Welding industry or enable additional skills to be gained for those in employment.
You will be taught by a competent, approachable team of staff who will support you throughout your course.
