Is this course for me?

The course is taught by expert tutors with a wide range of industry experience at the College's Centre for Excellence in Creative Arts, based in the School for the Arts. You will work on a wide range of projects, including live briefs set by practitioners from industry. You will also showcase your work to the public through exhibitions and national competitions. This creative course will help you explore all areas of Art and Design. It will build on your previous experience and develop your creative skills in a full range of art and design subjects, such as fine art, 3D Design, textiles and graphic design/illustration.

What will I study?

In the first year you cover a wide selection of areas in the visual arts, to give you a good overall level of skills, particularly the ability to draw. You have lessons in visual studies and the history of art & design, plus fine art, 3D, textiles, life class and visual studies. In the second year you specialise in one or two areas of 3D, textiles, graphics or fine art. The course structure can allow the qualification to be flexible to meet learners interests, abilities and aspirations. These units will allow you to build a professional portfolio of work.

How long is the course?

Full time for two academic years

How will I be assessed?

Coursework is project-based and is assessed throughout the course by your tutors. A range of assessment methods are used including external 'live' projects. You are required to evaluate your own coursework progress and in tutorials. You will not be required to sit an examination.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-4 or equivalent including maths or English and an art related subject.

What can I progress onto?

Previous students have progressed onto top universities across the UK as well as the Foundation Degree in Creative Industries at the University Centre Wigan & Leigh College. There are a wide range of career prospects including Artist/illustrator, Art Gallery Curator, Senior Curators, Art Therapists, Costume and Jewellery Designer, Fashion Stylist and Designer, Furniture and Product Designer, Games Designer, Graphic and Digital Designer, Photographer, Set Designer/Interior Designer, Sport or Forensic Photographer, Teacher, Textile Designer, Printmaker, Product Designer and Tattoo Artist.

Other Information

You will be taught by qualified lecturers who are also practising artists and designers. Opportunities for work experience, work related learning and guest speakers underpin the professional creative elements of the course and are part of your learning.
