Is this course for me?

If you want a rewarding career working in a childcare setting we have a number of routes for you to follow, including further study at university level. You will need to have a clear DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) to work in the childcare sector. Work placements will supplement your studies, and our industry professional tutors will help you to maximise your full potential. This technical certificate enables learners to enter the workforce as Early Years Educators or access Higher Education. The Diploma will enable learners to gain the knowledge and experience which will allow them to work with children from birth to 5 years.

What will I study?

You will study; child development from conception to seven years, childrens health and well being, play and learning, observation, assessment and planning, understanding childrens additional needs, as well as completing a work placement in a nursery and/or school.

How long is the course?

One academic year.

How will I be assessed?

All units are internally assessed using a range of methods. All units are graded A* D. Learners must also complete an Effective Practice Study Task and one Extended Assessment Task (externally set, externally marked).

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-4 or equivalent including maths or English.

What can I progress onto?

Into Higher Education or job roles as Early Years Educator, practitioner in day nursery, nursery schools, reception classes, preschool worker,homebased child carer, nanny.

Other Information

You will need an enhanced DBS certificate. We give advice and guidance on how to obtain this at Induction.

Pest Control Officers

Pest control officers investigate the presence of pests that are hazardous to public health or cause nuisance, lay traps to capture pests and treat areas of infestation.

Typical Tasks

  • Treats wood for effects of termites, woodworm and other infestations of timber.
  • Returns to sites to examine contents of traps laid and the continued presence of reported pests.
  • Liaises with environmental health officers, housing officers and other relevant authorities where measures on a large scale are required to remove pests.
  • Advises property owners on courses of action to prevent the return of pests.
  • Lays traps to capture pests, and fumigates and disinfects areas to remove infestations.
  • Visits sites to investigate the presence of rodents, infestations and other pests that may be hazardous to public health.
