Is this course for me?

Develop your knowledge to become a professional engineer, designing innovative products and services, as well as taking technical responsibility for complex engineering systems. You will improve competence in analysis and evaluation in order to problem solve and design solutions.

ALIGNED WITH INDUSTRY

Employers contribute to course content, so you will be learning the skills that meet the needs of industry and the competencies required for professional registration.

As part of the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT) we have access to the partner employer network.

WORK PLACEMENTS

Work placements often lead to highly paid employment after completing your studies. Due to the part-time nature of the course, if you are not already in employment, it may be possible to arrange a work placement with one of our employer partners.

INDUSTRY RELEVANT

Industry partners include: Sellafield, Jacobs, Cavendish, Nuvia, UKRI, and Tenet.

This degree has been accredited by the IET under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council. Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng). Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

EXPERIENCE OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

You will hear from industry leaders such as Sellafield, Highways England, Morson Projects, and others, as part of the guest speaker programme.

You will also have the opportunity to find out more about extending your studies to post graduate MSc level from specialist tutors from UCLan.

What will I study?

The following modules represent 120 credits to top-up from the 240 credits already gained to achieve the 360 credits required for a BEng (Hons) qualification. Two pathways are available- Power or Electronics. Once a pathway has been chosen, specialist modules from that pathway must be studied and cannot be changed.

A Professional Engineering Project (studied over the two year programme) and Circuits Networks and Electromagnetic Waves (second year module) are common to both pathways.

Specialist units for the Power Engineering Stream include:

Year 1

• Control Engineering

• Fundamentals of Electrical Machines

Year 2

• Power Electronics

Specialist units for the Electronic Engineering Stream include:

Year 1

• Signal and Systems

• Electronic Systems

Year 2

• Digital Signal Processing

How long is the course?

One day a week for two academic years. Tuesday in the first year, Monday in the second year ( for the Power pathway), Wednesday (for the Electronics pathway) - ( days could be subject to change).

How will I be assessed?

The programme is assessed through a variety of methods including written assignments, presentations, and exams.

What qualifications do I need?

Applicants from BTEC HND programmes in Engineering must have 240 credits at Levels 4 and 5, of which 120 must be at Level 5.

Applicants with equivalent qualifications are welcome.

We reserve the right to interview applicants.

Mature students with experience, a portfolio of work and employer references will be considered.

Students must also possess a Grade C/4 or above in Maths at GCSE or equivalent

What can I progress onto?

You may secure employment or a promotion at work. You may also work towards Incorporated Engineer status depending on your work experience and Chartered Engineer status through post graduate learning.

Masters Degrees - This course may lead to Masters programmes at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) or other higher education institutions.

Degree apprenticeships - This programme may be studied as part of a degree apprenticeship.
