Is this course for me?

If you enjoy gaming and feel you have creative ideas for games then this could be the industry for you. This is one of the fastest growing sectors of the entertainment industry. You will discover how the creative process is an integral part of the gaming industry from idea generation to digital concept artwork.

What will I study?

The programme is part of the Art and Design Diploma and therefore is creative and design based. You will develop skills around drawing, the design process, character creation, gaming concepts and production of digital images and animation. You will study life drawing in both years and develop your 3D computer modelling skills in the second year.

How long is the course?

Full time for two academic years

How will I be assessed?

Work is project based and is assessed throughout the course. A range of methods are used including externalprojects. You will develop a personal portfolio of work, which will help you pursue yourchosen career pathway.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-4 or equivalent including maths or English and an art related subject.

What can I progress onto?

You will develop the skills to progress on to university and can choose a degree in video games design and other design based programmes.

Other Information

You will be taught by qualified lecturers who are also practising artists and designers. Opportunities for work experience, work related learning and guest speakers to underpin the professional creative elements of the course are part of your learning. If

Artists create artistic works using appropriate techniques, materials and media; design artwork and illustrations; and restore damaged pieces of art.

  • Markets and sells finished work directly to customers.
  • Liaises with writers and publishers to produce book illustrations.
  • Uses artistic skills to restore damaged artworks.
  • Approaches managers of galleries and exhibitions in order to get finished work displayed.
  • Builds up composition into finished work by carving, sculpting, etching, painting, engraving, drawing, etc..
  • Prepares sketches, scale drawings or colour schemes.
  • Selects appropriate materials, medium and method.
  • Onceives and develops ideas and ways of working for artistic composition.

Graphic Designers

Graphic designers use illustrative, sound, visual and multimedia techniques to convey a message for information, entertainment, advertising, promotion or publicity purposes, and create special visual effects and animations for computer games, film, interactive and other media.

What could you earn


Typical Tasks

  • Produces or oversees creation of the final product.
  • Liaises with other parts of the production team to ensure graphic design fits with other elements, processes and timescales.
  • Prepares specification and instructions for realisation of the project.
  • Prepares sketches, scale drawings, models, colour schemes and other mock-ups to show clients and discusses any required alterations.
  • Undertakes research into project, considers previous related projects and compares costs of using different processes.
  • Liaises with client to clarify aims of project brief, discusses media, software and technology to be used, establishes timetable for project and defines budgetary constraints.
