Is this course for me?

Graphic designers are creative thinkers who use illustrative, sound, visual and multi-media techniques to create brands, communication and messages for entertainment, advertising, promotion or publicity purposes. They can also create special visual effects and animations for interactive computer games, film and other media. As you progress through the course you will build the skills and knowledge for a career in the visual communications industry.

What will I study?

You will develop your skills in graphic design studies - the communication of information using type and images, digital and illustration techniques, drawing/visual studies and the history of graphics and design. You will develop a personal portfolio of work throughout the course, to help you on your chosen career pathway. Many of the assignments are vocational, based in commercial settings and some involve real clients. You will also study life drawing in both years to develop your drawing skills and visual awareness. You will create an exciting range of practical work, both hand-rendered and digital to present in a professional standard personal portfolio.

How long is the course?

Full time for two academic years

How will I be assessed?

Work is project based and is assessed throughout the course. A range of methods are used including external projects. You are encouraged to evaluate your own progress using your own initiative and through tutorials.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-4 or equivalent including maths or English and an art related subject.

What can I progress onto?

You may secure a place on a university level course, or go directly into employment in the creative fashion industry. Previous students have progressed onto top universities across the UK including Glasgow, The Slade and London College of Fashion as well as the Foundation Degree in Creative Industries at the University Centre Wigan & Leigh College. Junior graphic designers earn around £16,000 a year. With experience you could earn between £23,000- £36,000.

What could you earn


Typical Tasks

  • Produces or oversees creation of the final product.
  • Liaises with other parts of the production team to ensure graphic design fits with other elements, processes and timescales.
  • Prepares specification and instructions for realisation of the project.
  • Prepares sketches, scale drawings, models, colour schemes and other mock-ups to show clients and discusses any required alterations.
  • Undertakes research into project, considers previous related projects and compares costs of using different processes.
  • Liaises with client to clarify aims of project brief, discusses media, software and technology to be used, establishes timetable for project and defines budgetary constraints.
