Is this course for me?

This course is intended as a broad based introduction to apprentices entering a career in either mechanical engineering or fabrication & welding. You need to be currently employed as an apprentice within the engineering sector and registered with the apprenticeship division or another training provider, who will administer your apprenticeship and training.

What will I study?

Mechanical Engineering: This course consists of 9 units: working safely, working efficiently & effectively, using & communicating technical information, hand fitting, turning, mechanical maintenance, wiring & testing electrical circuits, fluid power systems, electrical maintenance. Plus 5 Technical Certificate units: working in engineering, engineering technology, manufacturing technology, machining by turning, using bench fitting techniques. Fabrication & Welding: This course consists of 6 units: working safely, working efficiently & effectively, using & communicating technical information, producing sheet metal components & assemblies, preparing & using MMA welding equipment, preparing & using manual MIG, MAG & other continuous wire welding equipment.

How long is the course?

You will attend College one day per week for one academic year with the remainder of your time in the workplace.

How will I be assessed?

Through competence based assessment within individual units.

What qualifications do I need?

3 GCSEs grade C or above in Maths, English Language and ICT is preferred.

What can I progress onto?

Progression to NVQ Level 3 in a Fabrication/Welding or Mechanical Engineering discipline plus study for further education certificates.
