Is this course for me?

A HNC in Mechanical Engineering is a valuable and highly regarded qualification within the industry. The programme is preparation for those who wish to progress onto a Top-Up Degree programme in engineering. The course is also ideal for those who are looking to establish a career in the industry or progress in their current position with an organisation. In addition the programme provides students with analytical thinking skills and the principles of mechanical engineering.

What will I study?

The course includes units such as: Engineering Design, Engineering Maths, Engineering Science, Managing a Professional Engineering Project, Fluid Mechanics, Computer Aided Design and Manufacture, Mechanical Workshop Principles, Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines. Two of the following units will be offered: Fluid Mechanics, Mechanical Workshop Practices, Computer Aided Design and Manufacture (CAD/CAM).

How long is the course?

Up to 3 academic years

How will I be assessed?

The HNC programme is assessed through a variety of methods from written assignments to course work.

What qualifications do I need?

A relevant Level 3 Diploma. . Mature students with experience, a portfolio of work and employer references will be considered. Students must also possess a Grade C or above in Maths at GCSE or equivalent.

What can I progress onto?

Completion of the HNC may lead to progress onto the HND. Students may progress onto the BEng (Hons) Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering top up degree at the University Centre Wigan & Leigh College.
