Is this course for me?

To become a motor vehicle technician you will need to have good practical skills and need to be good at problem solving and finding faults. You will learn how to carry out basic vehicle mechanical and electrical repairs. It will give you some of the practical skills and knowledge needed for a career as a mechanic or body repairer. You will also need to be a good with people and have great customer service skills.

What will I study?

The seven units of study to be completed are: Working safely & effectively during light vehicle maintenance & repair, foundation skills for light vehicle maintenance & repair, light vehicle construction & routine maintenance, operating principles of light vehicle tyres, brakes, steering & suspension systems, operating principles of light vehicle engines, operating principles & maintenance of light vehicle transmission systems and operating principles & maintenance of light vehicle electrical & electronic systems.

How long is the course?

Full time for one academic year.

How will I be assessed?

By completing a portfolio of practical tasks, multiple choice assessments.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 A*-E/F / 9-2 subjects or equivalent.

What can I progress onto?

To the Level 2 Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles, subject to course requirements being met.
