Is this course for me?

A career in painting and decorating can be diverse and rewarding. This industry requires a high level of skill and precision. You will need a steady hand and a head for heights to use ladders and working platforms for internal and external duties. This course suits those considering entering the building industry who would like to learn painting and decorating. The course is developed to introduce first time entrants to the skill of painting and decorating.

What will I study?

This course consists of practical tasks with theoretical study. Students learn the underpinning knowledge to achieve the Painting & Decorating Level 1 Diploma. A Diploma can be upgraded to a full apprenticeship as and when employment is gained. Learners will: carry out safe working practices in construction, read key industrial information, work with quantities and communicate with others, learn building methods and construction technology, prepare surfaces for decoration, apply paint systems by brush and roller, apply foundation and plain papers and produce specialist decorative finishes.

How long is the course?

Full time for one academic year

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is by a set theoretical knowledge test taken at the College. Students also meet regularly with tutors to help plan studies and to discuss progress.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-2 or equivalent.

What can I progress onto?

This can lead to the Painting and Decorating Level 2 Technical or onto an Apprenticeship.

Painters and Decorators

Those working in this unit group apply paint, varnish, wallpaper and other protective and decorative materials to interior and exterior walls and surfaces, paint designs on wood, glass, metal, plastics and other materials, and stain, wax and French polish wood surfaces by hand.

Typical Tasks

  • Stains, waxes and French polishes wood surfaces by hand.
  • Mixes adhesive or removes self-adhesive backing and positions covering material on wall, matching up patterns where appropriate and removing wrinkles and air bubbles by hand or brush.
  • Applies primer, undercoat and finishing coat(s) using brush, roller, or spray equipment.
  • Prepares surfaces by cleaning, sanding and filling cracks and holes with appropriate filler.
  • Erects working platform or scaffolding up to five metres in height.
