Is this course for me?

The Photography programme is taught by leading industry experts at the College's Centre of Excellence in Creative Arts at the Schools for the Arts in Wigan and at Leigh College. 90% of our Level 3 students continue with their creative studies at some of the country's top universities. You will have access to our dedicated production and studio-based classrooms. Our university standard facilities are used by all our students, who are taught by highly experienced tutors, offering a wealth of industry knowledge and links with employers. You will develop the skills and confidence to succeed in the creative sector, carrying out work experience on real live industry briefs. You will showcase your work in exhibitions and visit events and galleries.

What will I study?

This course will introduce you to the techniques of both traditional and digital photography. You will be working in our professionally equipped studio, on location, in our large darkroom and in our state of the art digital workshops. The course offers you the opportunity to explore photography for fashion, advertising and marketing, photo journalism, portraiture as well as fine art. The course content also includes visual studies, desk top publishing and historical/contextual studies. Throughout the course, you will be encouraged to explore your own avenues of interest and develop a portfolio of personal work, which will help you pursue your chosen career pathway.

How long is the course?

Full time for two academic years

How will I be assessed?

Work is project based and is assessed throughout the course. A range of methods are used including external projects. You are encouraged to evaluate your own progress using your own initiative and through tutorials.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 A*-C / 9-4 GCSE subjects or equivalent including maths or English and an art related subject.

What can I progress onto?

On completion of the Level 3 Photography programme you may secure a place on a university level course or employment within the industry. Alumni have gone on to achieve first class honours degrees and also establish their own businesses in commercial, nature and wedding photography. Experienced Photographers can expect to earn up to £50,000 a year.

You will be taught by qualified lecturers who are also practising artists and designers. Opportunities for work experience, work related learning and guest speakers to underpin the professional creative elements of the course are part of your learning.
