Is this course for me?

A career in plastering can be diverse and rewarding. This industry requires a high level of skill and precision. You will need a steady hand and a head for heights to use ladders and working platforms to carry out internal and external duties. This course is for those who would like to gain a qualification in the trade. On completion of the Level 2 Plastering Technical Certificate, the dedication and achievement you have shown during the course will prove invaluable to prospective employers.

What will I study?

This course consists of flexible programme of practical and theoretical study. The programme is offered as a continuation from the Level 1 Diploma in Plastering. Learners will carry out safe working practices in construction, use building information, quantities and communicate with others, develop skills in building methods and construction technology, apply plaster materials to external surfaces, fix dry lining and plasterboard products to interiors, form sand and cement screeds, produce plaster components, apply plaster materials to internal surfaces, position and secure fibrous plaster components and a practical assessment.

How long is the course?

Full time for one academic year

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is via practical skills and the underpinning knowledge, including short tests, subject assignments. There is an externally set theory test at the end of the course.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-3 or equivalent including maths or English.

What can I progress onto?

Students can progress onto a Plastering apprenticeship or the Level 3 Diploma in Plastering.

Plasterers

Plasterers apply dry linings, plaster and cement mixtures to walls and ceilings, fix fibrous sheets and cast and fix ornamental plasterwork to the interior or exterior of buildings.

Typical Tasks

  • Checks surface level using line, spirit level and straight edge.
  • Covers and seals joints between boards and finishes surface.
  • Measures, cuts, installs and secures plaster board and/or ornamental plasterwork to walls and ceilings.
  • Pours liquid plaster into mould to cast ornamental plaster work.
  • Applies and smooths one or more coats of plaster and produces a finished surface, using hand tools or mechanical spray.
  • Mixes, or directs the mixing of, plaster to desired consistency.
  • Selects appropriate plasterboard or dry lining panels, cuts them to required size and fixes them to ceilings and walls.
