Is this course for me?

Plumbers fit, service and repair hot and cold water systems, and heating systems in homes and businesses. If you want a varied job that makes good use of your practical skills and takes you out and about, plumbing could be the career for you. You will need to be good at solving problems, be able to follow technical plans, and understand the importance of health and safety. Youll also need good customer care skills.

What will I study?

You will gain a basic understanding of health and safety, the construction industry, plumbing processes, plumbing systems, drainage systems and repair and maintenance. You will gain experience of using a variety of materials, bending and jointing methods and installation practices commonly used within the industry. Assessment is by an externally set theoretical knowledge test, together with unit tests and continually assessed coursework.

How long is the course?

Full time for one academic year

How will I be assessed?

By continuous external and internal assessment; completing a portfolio containing workshop based evidence and ten examinations.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-2 or equivalent.

What can I progress onto?

This qualification can lead to you gaining employment in the plumbing industry and gaining further qualifications at Level 2. A highly experienced Plumber can earn over £37,000 a year. Those who work in the Manchester area can expect to be paid 20% more than a Plumber's average national salary. There are 5,143 plumbers employed in the region.

Roofers, roof tilers and slaters cover roofs and exterior walls with felting, sheeting, slates, tiles and thatch to provide a waterproof surface.

Typical Tasks

  • Seals edges of roof with mortar and ensures that joints are watertight.
  • Lays, aligns and secures successive overlapping layers of roofing material.
  • Lays and secures underfelt and covers with hot bitumen or other adhesive compound.
  • Cuts wooden battens, felt and underfelt to required size.
  • Measures roof or exterior wall and calculates required amounts of underfelt, tiles, slates or thatching material.
