25049L0 | Leigh College
Start Date | Sept 18
Time/Day | 18:00 - 20:30 TUESDAY

Is this course for me?

Single Award Science is an interesting course that covers all three branches of Science. Many courses, such as teaching and nursing, expect a grade C in Science as an entry qualification. This course is particularly suited to those who did not achieve this while in full time education.

What will I study?

The course is made up of 4 components: 1) Biology including keeping healthy, DNA and evolution and our impact on the environment, 2) Chemistry including atoms and molecules, the importance of metals and oils and effects on the Earth and the atmosphere, 3) Physics including heat transfer, electricity and the Big Bang theory and 4) Controlled Assessment a practical investigation which is carried out in class and assessed by two 'in class' exams.

How long is the course?

This one year evening course has three science disciplines. Classes are also available at Leigh College on Tuesday 6.00 8.30 pm and also at Parsons Walk Centre on Tuesday or Wednesday 6.00 8.30 pm.

How will I be assessed?

There is a written examination in each of the three science subjects. The centre assessed component is assessed through practical work and two written exams.

What qualifications do I need?

Recent school leavers should possess a grade D in GCSE Science, but for adults, a mature and committed approach can be an effective substitute for formal qualifications.

What can I progress onto?

GCSE Science is a nationally recognised qualification and is essential for entry to primary school teaching and health related courses.

Other Information

The year is divided into three parts with each subject taught separately. The practical assessment is integrated throughout the year.
