Is this course for me?

HND Applied Science (Biology) provides the knowledge, understanding and practical skills to build a successful career in the biological science sector. The HND includes a solid grounding in many areas of biology from physiology, molecular biology and genetics, to microbiology,immunology, data analysis and practical work. This is placed in an applied, vocational context so you will gain theoretical and experimental knowledge and understanding, but will see how this relates to the workplace. You will develop problem solving, analytical and investigative transferable skills to meet employer needs from a range of working environments.

What will I study?

Modules include: Fundamentals of Laboratory Techniques; Scientific Data Handing Approaches and Techniques; Regulation and Quality in the Applied Sciences; Cell Biology; Fundamentals of Chemistry; Anatomy and Human Physiology; Analysis of Scientific Data and Information; Applied Sciences Research Project; Biochemistry of Macromolecules and Metabolic Pathways; Molecular Biology and Genetics; Immunology; Principles of Ecology and their Applications; Genetics Analysis; Microbiological Techniques; Stem Cell Biology.

How long is the course?

Full time for two academic years

How will I be assessed?

The HND programme is assessed through a variety of methods, from written assignments to coursework and practical investigations.

What qualifications do I need?

80 UCAS points. Mature students with experience, a portfolio of work and references will be considered. Students will also possess a grade 4 or above at GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English.

What can I progress onto?

Employment - The higher nationals meet the needs of employers and enhance employability in hospital and private laboratories, research, drug registration and patents, food industry and biotechnology. Full honours degrees - You may be eligible to join the third year of an honours degree in pharmacology, biology, genetics, biomedical science, biotechnology, ecology and conservation. Professional qualifications - You may go on to achieve professional awards offered by the Royal Society of Biology.

£7500.00

Course fees shown are per annum for University Centre courses. Courses lasting longer than one year, fees will be payable per year.
