Is this course for me?

With a learning and education sector that encompasses further education colleges, sixth forms, adult and community learning, the National Health Service and private sector training organisations there are a large number of teaching opportunities available. These courses will qualify you to teach in the Post-compulsory Education and Training sector. Successful PGCE applicants may be able to undertake their teaching practice at Wigan & Leigh College.

What will I study?

Modules include: Preparation for Education and Training, Curriculum Design & Assessment, Teaching Learning and Assessment, Contemporary Issues in Education, Developing Teaching Learning and Assessment, Action Research: Deconstructing Practice. You will also gain a minimum of 150 hours teaching practice.

How long is the course?

Full-time for one academic year. You will undertake two days in class and two days on your trainee teacher placement.

How will I be assessed?

The PGCE is assessed through a variety of methods including assignment writing, presentations and observations. You will also be required to keep a reflective portfolio which will be handed in at the end of the programme.

What qualifications do I need?

5 GCSEs grade C and above; a degree explicitly related to the subject that you want to teach; 150 hours of teaching placement and a satisfactory DBS. Other qualifications or experience may apply see UCLan's Accreditation of Prior Learning scheme. Trainees

What can I progress onto?

Previous students have progressed to teaching in a variety of positions within the education and training sector. Trainee teachers have also gone on to complete a MEd. (Masters in Education) at UCLan.

Other Information

You must hold a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure Certificate, issued through Wigan & Leigh College. There is a DBS charge for processing this application, and this fee must be paid in addition to all other course fees. Acceptance is subject to a clear DBS report and references.
