Head of Apprenticeships Dave Love and Apprentice Millie Hutchinson Lead the Way in Shaping the Future of Construction
16 January 2026
Wigan & Leigh College is proud to celebrate its role in tackling the UK’s construction skills gap, spotlighting Dave Love, Head of Apprenticeships, and Millie Hutchinson, an inspiring electrical apprentice who feature on Manchester’s new ‘Built to Inspire’ mural, celebrating construction workers, further education teachers and students shaping our skylines!
The mural, unveiled in Central Manchester as part of the Department for Education’s ‘Teach in Further Education’ and ‘Skills for Life’ campaigns, honours construction heroes and iconic landmarks while calling for fresh talent to join the sector. With over 35,000 construction vacancies and an ambition to train 60,000 more professionals by 2029, the campaign highlights the urgent need for skilled workers and industry-experienced teachers.
Millie’s Story: “I wanted a path that gave me structure, opportunity, and personal development,” says Millie. “I knew the traditional university route wasn’t right for me – I wanted a path that combined practical experience with ongoing learning and career progression. Further education gave me exactly that: the balance of structure, opportunity, and personal development that I was looking for.”
Millie continues, “Construction is male dominated, but I saw an opportunity to challenge that norm. Every job has helped me grow in confidence and realise the value I bring. If you’re thinking about an apprenticeship, go for it – stepping outside your comfort zone is where real growth happens.”
Dave Love’s Journey: “I ran my own electrical business for seven years while continuing my studies at college, this is where I was talent-spotted and encouraged to teach,” shares Dave. “The flexibility and support made it possible to train on the job while balancing family life. Now, I get to make a real impact – not just on learners’ careers, but on the future of the industry. If you’re an experienced professional, teaching in FE is one of the best ways to share your skills and passion.”
The national campaign is calling out, if you have 2+ years of industry experience, consider passing on your skills by teaching in FE.
