Warren Turley

I’m a Level 2 Rugby coach as well as a professional Rugby League match official. I’ve been involved in officiating a variety of games at the highest level in England as well as in a World Cup and Four Nations series.

current role

I teach on the Sport and Public Services programmes. I love the different avenues a sports course can take you. Some students start our courses and don’t really know what they want to study, but by the time they leave us they might understand and be a lot more interested in Nutrition or Sports Psychology, which they may have never studied before.

career highlights and achievements...

A career highlight was becoming the youngest ever Grade 1 Referee as part of the RFL at the age of 18. Refereeing the curtain raiser to the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium and being selected to Officiate in a World Cup back in 2013 were achievements I am very proud of.

inspiration...

I was inspired by my dad who used to be on the coaching staff at Leigh Centurions rugby club so that was always something I wanted to do after seeing the enjoyment and success that brought. I was also inspired by a number of teachers I had through school who both had a long history within Rugby League at junior levels and enjoyed passing on their knowledge to their learners.

academic background...

BA (Hons) Physical Education at Leeds University prior to me achieving my Post Graduate teaching qualification.
