Wigan & Leigh College are delighted to have entered into an exciting partnership with Wigan Athletic Community Trust.

The collaboration starts at the beginning of the new academic year in September and will provide excellent opportunities for the hundreds of sports students at the College.

Students will receive four hours per week of professional coaching from Wigan Community Trust’s coaches, which will support their skill development as well as their aspirations and future careers.

Although primarily based at Leigh College, which already boasts state-of-the-art facilities thanks to its base at Leigh Sports Village, students studying at the Wigan centres will also benefit from the partnership.

The College, which is a Centre of Excellence for Sport, has a 100% pass rate for students across all sports courses and now has the added bonus of working with the official charity of the newly promoted Championship side, providing many exclusive benefits.

Students will have opportunities to visit the club’s training centre as well as training and having fixtures against the Latics’ academy team.

As part of the football development academy they will receive a bespoke strength and conditioning programme and nutritional guidance to support their development as a player.

Paul Heald, Head of Sport at Wigan & Leigh College said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience a taste of what is it is like to work and train like a professional athlete, working with professional football coaches.
“There will also be opportunities for sports students to conduct work placements with the club as part of the Community Trust programme.”

Wigan & Leigh College Vice Principal, Claire Foreman added: “We are delighted to have teamed up with Wigan Athletic Community Trust and proud that this partnership will be able to offer amazing opportunities for our students and the positive impact and enhancement it will have will bring to their college experience.”
