Wigan & Leigh College launched its first cross-curriculum Challenge last week, with a number of schools battling it out to be declared winners.

Deanery High School excelled on the day and their team gained enough points from the eight subject challenges to become champions.

Each school invited was asked to bring along a team of six Year 10 pupils to compete in a range of subject disciplines.

The intellectual challenge builds upon the success of the Leigh College Challenge which recently staged its fourth annual contest.

Teams were tested in English, maths and science as well as history, sport, media studies, psychology and art.

Teams from Standish Community High School, St Peter’s Catholic High School, Lathom High School, Albany Academy and Hindley High School were also well represented.

Pupils were selected to compete in the various subject challenges based on having good knowledge or possessing specialist skills in particular areas.

Group tasks were varied and included a science challenge which consisted of identifying four different organic compounds from test tube reactions, a maths relay, a ‘Dragons’ Den’ style sports activity and a historical micro study on The Treaty of Versailles.

Head of Teaching and Academic Studies, Tanya Evans, said: “The pupils from all of the schools showed tremendous efforts and should be very proud.

“They represented their schools brilliantly during the event and were actively involved in all aspects of the competition - congratulations to Deanery High School!

“The event allows pupils to develop their team working, communication and problem solving skills as well as enjoy the opportunities to work with students and teachers from Wigan & Leigh College in a range of subjects offered.”
